My love, or is it infatuation, with the arts has helped me to make a startling discovery. It’s neither the discovery of the sea route to India nor the mathematical simulation of the unified force theory of evolution. It is the discovery of a man -a man named E.M Forster. His “Two Cheers for Democracy” contains one memorable quote that has a minus for countries like ours. Forster wrote: “if I am to choose between betraying my friend and my country – I hope I will have the guts to betray my country.”
Forster equally turned his attention on an analysis – analysis of the duties of man, in his other work, “A Passage to India.” To him, “a man has two duties: to worry and not to worry.” Believe you me, it is the first of the two duties that have occupied my time these past few months – the economy, naira devaluation, OIL PRICE plunge, inflationary trends, political campaigns and the upcoming elections, etc.
To say the least, ever since the campaigns started, it’s been knocks here and there – from the presidential to the state level. We have seen claims and counter-claims by both the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), at the federal level. While the opposition APC has continually maintained that the PDP Federal Government has performed below expectation in all performance indices – roads, power/energy, insecurity, economic management, etc, the ruling PDP, has equally been busy countering these claims, and also showcasing some of their achievements.
Abia State is not left out, being a microcosm of our nation. For many years, the state has been governed by the PDP. However, governance, in the last eight years, has been a total failure. People are even bold to call it a failed state. The outgoing administration of Chief Theodore A. Orji, has failed dismally in providing the citizens the so-called democracy dividends. Propaganda has become the order of the day, so much so that projects are commissioned on air, with nothing seen physically.
Basic infrastructures in the state are nowhere to be found. Our roads have become death traps. Nobody even talk about public water supply any more, even in the two major cities of Umuahia and Aba. Worse hit is Aba, hitherto the Japan of Nigeria. It was then said that there is nothing that cannot be found or produced in Aba. The city has become a shadow of its own self. Where has all the ingenuity and acumen of an average Aba resident gone to? They have been swept away by the almost eight years of Ochendo’s maladministration.
One fact that most Nigerians have failed to realise is that success in life has nothing to do with how much money you have in your pocket or bank account. However, it has a lot to do with how much impact you have made in the society. The key here being your ability to leave a place better than you met it. Can Ochendo be said to fit into this mould? Emphatically No. He is leaving Abia worse than he met it.
Presently, of the candidates jostling for the soul of Abia, the two key candidates are Dr Okezie Ikpeazu of the ruling PDP and Dr. Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Dr Ikpeazu is seen as a stooge of Chief T.A Orji, the outgoing governor. It is even said, in some circles, that the governor’s son, Chinedu, proposed and insisted on Dr Ikpeazu being the PDP governorship candidate. What can we make from such an arrangement? I leave you to make your own judgment. But failure can only beget failure.
Ikpeazu’s antecedents are that he presided over Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and Aba, Abia’s commercial nerve centre, is still seen as the dirtiest city in Nigeria. Heaps of refuse have overtaken the major roads in Aba and rendered them impassable. Is governance now a family business? Abians have passed through a lot and therefore, should know better. The present PDP administration in Abia has failed woefully to address the needs of Abians, and thus, Dr Ikpeazu, the governor’s crony, cannot be any better.
Going by the precarious state we have found ourselves, what Abia needs is a governor that can turn the state around, and rescue it from the decadence the ruling PDP has put it in. And in Alex Otti of the APGA, Abians have a man that can take them to the Promised Land. Since joining the political fray, Otti has become the leading light among the aspirants. This stems from the fact that he has something to offer. His antecedents and achievements as the immediate past GMD of Diamond Bank Plc speak volumes. Otti is disciplined, industrious and resourceful. What Abians need is a governor that will galvanise and inspire the people to greatness. And all these are encapsulated in Alex Otti.
Of course, knowing the sterling qualities that Otti possesses, the ruling party is not keeping quiet. Hence, the continuous vandalisation and defacing of his campaign billboards and posters. This, of course, is a defeatist strategy, and an admission of the superiority of your opponent. However, no amount of defamation or hate campaign against Otti will deter him. He is a man that is set on a course that he should follow. Equally, the Abia electorate have long made up their minds to vote for change, and they see Dr Otti as representing that change.
Finally, Otti, by my own reckoning, represents our best opportunity of trying to undo the wrongs in Abia State. I therefore implore all Abians to listen to their consciences and vote massively for him, and let the rebuilding of Abia begin. I have listened to him, and equally read his manifesto. Abia will therefore, fare much better with him on the saddle. Dr Alex Otti is one man that will clean the Ochendo mess, and guarantee Abians an enduring legacy.
